Phonics

We are passionate about every child learning to read. To achieve this, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a systematic and synthetic phonics programme designed to give your child the best possible start to their reading journey.

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It involves:

  • Identifying the sounds (phonemes) that are made by individual letters or groups of letters (graphemes).
  • Blending these sounds together from left to right to make a word.

How we teach Phonics

Our phonics lessons are fast-paced, engaging, and highly structured.

  • Daily Lessons: Children in Reception and Year 1 have a daily phonics lesson. This ensures they learn at a rapid pace and can catch up quickly if they fall behind.
  • Reading Practice Sessions: Your child reads in a small group with a fully trained adult at least three times a week.
  • Matched Reading Books: The books your child reads in school and takes home are perfectly matched to their current phonic knowledge. This allows them to read with confidence and develop their fluency.

Supporting your child at home

Consistency between school and home is vital for your child’s progress. We will send home a Reading Practice Book (which your child should be able to read almost independently) and a Sharing Book for you to read together to foster a love of reading.

Little Wandle provides a dedicated parents' area on their website filled with helpful resources, including videos to show you exactly how to pronounce the sounds and how to support your child at home.

  • Visit the Little Wandle Parent Resource Area to watch pronunciation videos and access helpful guides.
  • Ask your class teacher about our upcoming phonics workshops or if you need any extra supporting content.
