INTENT
Jesus Christ is as the centre of our school. Our Mission Statement expresses the importance of worship and being a true witness to our faith. The Catholic values are embedded into our everyday school life by all members of staff and pupils. We lead by example in teaching the Gospel and British Values.
The aim of our R.E. curriculum, is to build pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith, including catholic traditions, significant symbols and dates in history relevant to the early Christian Church, as well as the meaning behind continued routines and practices.
Our curriculum explores the pupils’ personal family experiences which then progresses onto their understanding of Jesus’ family, which aids the pupils’ sense of belonging and enables them to see how the Catholic teachings are relevant to them.
By fostering pupils’ religious understanding, including fostering respect for other religions and their practices, and providing them with multiple opportunities to be involved in their parish community, we intend to enhance their spiritual life and provide them with the lifelong safety blanket, known as faith.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our R.E. non-negotiables ensure compliance and coverage of fundamental key concepts, the monitoring of pupil progress, the development of pupils’ religious knowledge and appropriate scaffolding to become confident and independent learners.
Teachers follow the Come and See Scheme of work with accompaniment of the new Religious Education Directory Scheme, called ‘The Source and Summit: Lighting the Path’. However, teachers continually adapt the scheme to suit their children and to cater for creative and independent learning.
IMPACT
Our progressive R.E. curriculum ensures that children revisit their prior learning regularly. This prior learning is developed in more depth within each academic year, building pupils’ knowledge of scripture and conceptual understanding behind The Word.
Both pre and post assessments are used to revisit and embed key knowledge but also to show individual pupil progress within each topic. Summative assessment is again used to track pupil progress and attainment throughout KS1 and KS2.
