MATHS

Intent

At Our Lady of Grace RC Primary School, our Mathematics curriculum is ambitious, carefully structured, and designed to be accessible to all. It is underpinned by the 2014 National Curriculum and a clear progression of knowledge and skills that children need to acquire by the end of each year.

We aim for all our children to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
  • Develop the ability to reason mathematically
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding in a variety of contexts

We are committed to ensuring every child appreciates the relevance of Mathematics both across the curriculum and in the wider world. Our intent is to provide a Maths education that builds confidence, resilience and fosters a life-long enjoyment of the subject. We aim for every child to experience success and to feel empowered in their mathematical journey, becoming enthusiastic and curious learners.

Implementation

At Our Lady of Grace, all children take part in daily Mathematics lessons that provide a broad, balanced, and progressive curriculum. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme across the school to ensure consistency, progression and to support both our single and mixed-age classes.

Key elements of our implementation include:

  • High Expectations: All children are encouraged and supported to reach high standards in Maths.
  • Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving: These core elements are embedded across all lessons and revisited regularly.
  • Carefully Structured Lessons: Learning is underpinned by a clear, methodical sequence of teaching that builds deep conceptual understanding.
  • Use of Resources: A wide range of resources, including manipulatives and visual aids, are used to support all learners.
  • Daily Practice and Consolidation: Opportunities for recall and practice are embedded, ensuring children become secure and confident in their learning.
  • Formative Assessment: Teachers use questioning, feedback, and ongoing assessment to adapt teaching and address gaps swiftly.
  • Support and Challenge: Children who need additional help receive timely interventions such as pre-teaching or consolidation. Those who are ready for more are given opportunities to explore topics in greater depth.

Children also use Times Tables Rock Stars to support fluency in multiplication, particularly in Key Stage 2, with access both in school and at home.

Before each new unit of work, teachers revisit prior learning and ensure children are equipped with the foundational skills required. Visual models, concrete manipulatives, and exploratory talk are used to introduce new ideas, moving gradually towards independent application.

Impact

We aim for all children to leave Our Lady of Grace with a strong mathematical foundation, able to make rich connections between concepts and apply their knowledge confidently. They will be equipped not only to meet the next stage of their education but also to use Maths in real-life situations with assurance.

Our assessment approach includes:

  • Formative Assessment: Teachers assess understanding in every lesson and provide feedback to move learning forward.
  • Summative Assessment: Termly White Rose assessments are used from Year 1 upwards, with additional past paper practice for Years 2 and 6 to prepare for statutory assessments.
  • EYFS: Assessment is continuous and based on observation and adult-led activities.

Assessment outcomes are used to identify gaps, measure progress, and plan future learning. The majority of children will progress at the same pace, with additional support or challenge provided as needed.

The impact of our Maths curriculum is also monitored regularly by the Maths Lead through book scrutinies, lesson visits, and discussions with staff and pupils, ensuring high standards are maintained and best practices are shared.

Ultimately, we want all children at Our Lady of Grace to feel confident, capable, and inspired by Mathematics.
