Intent
At Our Lady of Grace RC Primary School, we teach Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) to help children develop curiosity about other cultures and languages. Through learning French, pupils gain the skills to understand, speak, read and write in another language with growing confidence. We aim to build enthusiasm for language learning that continues into secondary school.
Our intent is to:
• Foster curiosity and respect for other cultures.
• Develop speaking and listening as the foundation of language learning.
• Build vocabulary and understanding through practical, engaging lessons.
• Encourage children to communicate in French for real purposes.
• Promote enjoyment and confidence when learning a new language.
Implementation
MFL is taught weekly across Key Stage 2 by class teachers, following a clear progression of skills and vocabulary. Lessons include songs, games, role-play and written tasks to make learning active and memorable.
• Each unit builds on previous knowledge of key vocabulary and sentence structures.
• Children practise listening, speaking, reading and writing in every lesson.
• Pronunciation and understanding are modelled through visual and audio resources.
• Learning is celebrated through MFL assemblies and whole-school events.
• Evidence of learning is recorded in a class floor book, showing progression and coverage.
• Cultural links are made to French-speaking countries to build global awareness.
Impact
Our approach ensures children leave Key Stage 2 with a positive attitude towards language learning and a foundation of French vocabulary and grammar.
• Pupils can understand and respond to simple spoken and written French.
• Pupils can engage in short conversations using familiar vocabulary.
• Pupils can write simple sentences and phrases to express ideas.
• Pupils show increased confidence and enthusiasm for languages.
• Pupil voice, assemblies and floor books show clear progress and enjoyment across year groups.
