INTENT
Our core aim in science at Our Lady of Grace is to ensure that all children are exposed to a broad, investigative and knowledge-based curriculum.
We provide our pupils with the skills to explore a line of scientific enquiry, and the ability to communicate and analyse their findings in writing, as well as in data form. Pupils are challenged to theorise and suggest reasons why things happen by planning and executing lessons which inspire children to ask scientific questions and encourage them to present their findings in front of the class.
Teachers set tasks which are open-ended, allowing children to work towards mastering each strand of science throughout the year. Appropriate resources are used to allow children to gain the best first-hand experiences and Teaching Assistants support the children, ensuring that pupils reach their full potential throughout their whole journey of science throughout Our Lady of Grace.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our science non-negotiables ensure coverage of fundamental key concepts, the monitoring of pupil progress, the development of pupils’ scientific knowledge and enquiry skills and appropriate scaffolding to become confident and independent learners. The ‘Working Scientifically’ objectives are incorporated within each topic, allowing pupils to revisit and consolidate their practical skills. Science lessons at Our Lady of Grace are designed to be interesting, creative, and fun for all learners. Therefore, teachers may use various planning resources which aim to inspire and support teacher CPD; such as Oak National Academy, Classroom Secrets and other personalised content.
IMPACT
Constant clever questioning, including both didactive and socratic questions, from both pupils and staff, allows for effective and accurate formative assessment. As well as this, each topic has a starter and exit quiz to evidence summative assessment. Teachers input their judgement onto Sonar and target any pupils not yet reaching their potential through informal interventions. All pupils are expected to demonstrate progression whether it be through written work or oral explanations.
