Intent
At Our Lady of Grace RC Primary School, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed to provide all children with the opportunity to develop a love for physical activity, build essential skills, and understand the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. We aim to foster teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship while encouraging children to engage in a variety of physical activities.
We strive for all our children to:
• Develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, and physical fitness
• Engage in a variety of sports and physical activities, from team games to gymnastics and individual sports
• Build confidence, teamwork, and leadership through group activities and competitive events
Our intent is to ensure every child leaves Our Lady of Grace with the skills, confidence, and passion to continue being active, enjoying physical activity for life.
Implementation
At Our Lady of Grace, we deliver a broad and balanced PE curriculum, focusing on key areas such as team games, gymnastics, invasion games, and a variety of sporting events. We emphasize skill development, teamwork, and a sense of fair play, providing children with the tools to be successful both in competitive and non-competitive contexts.
Key elements of our implementation include:
• High Expectations: All children are encouraged to participate and strive for personal excellence in physical activity.
• Varied Activities: The curriculum includes a wide range of sports, team games, and gymnastics, ensuring children develop a well-rounded skill set.
• Teamwork and Sportsmanship: We prioritize working together, learning how to collaborate and support one another through both competitive and non-competitive activities.
• Physical Fitness: Children are encouraged to understand the importance of regular physical activity for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
• Competitive and Non-Competitive Events: We provide children with the opportunity to participate in inter-school events, competitions, and friendly sporting activities to foster a spirit of healthy competition.
• Assessment and Feedback: Teachers use ongoing formative assessment to monitor progress, providing feedback to help children improve and achieve their best.
• Inclusivity: We cater for all levels of ability, ensuring that every child is engaged, motivated, and supported throughout their PE journey.
Our PE lessons are delivered in a safe and supportive environment, where children are encouraged to challenge themselves, take risks, and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.
Impact
We aim for all children to leave Our Lady of Grace with the physical literacy, teamwork skills, and positive attitude towards physical activity that will enable them to lead healthy and active lives. Through participation in a variety of sports and events, children will build resilience, communication, and leadership skills that extend beyond PE lessons.
Our assessment approach includes:
• Formative Assessment: Teachers assess children's physical abilities, participation, and teamwork skills during lessons and provide feedback to promote improvement.
• Summative Assessment: Children’s progress in key physical skills is monitored throughout the year, with opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment in events.
• EYFS: Assessment is ongoing, with a focus on physical development through active play and movement-based activities.
Assessment data is used to identify individual strengths, areas for improvement, and to plan future activities that challenge and engage all children. The impact of our PE curriculum is also monitored through participation rates in events, feedback from children, and observations during lessons.
Ultimately, we want every child at Our Lady of Grace to feel confident in their physical abilities, have a strong understanding of the importance of physical health, and have the skills to continue enjoying sport and physical activity throughout their lives.
